Chondrolectin is a type I membrane protein with a carbohydrate recognition domain characteristic of C-type lectins in its extracellular portion. In other proteins, this domain is involved in endocytosis of glycoproteins and exogenous sugar-bearing pathogens. This protein localizes predominantly to the perinuclear region. The deduced 273-amino acid protein has a calculated molecular mass of about 30.4 kD. CHODL is a type-1A integral membrane protein that contains an N-terminal signal peptide with a putative cleavage site; a long extracellular domain containing an isolated C-type CRD motif; a single membrane-spanning domain near the C terminus; and a short cytoplasmic tail. It also has several potential O- and N-glycosylation sites, several potential phosphorylation sites, and 8 potential N-myristoylation sites.
