The deduced 282-amino acid protein contains a coiled coil-domain and an F-actin-binding domain that shares significant homology with F-actin-binding domains of ERM proteins. However, unlike ERM proteins, ermin lacks an N-terminal FERM domain. Northern blot analysis of human tissues detected a major 4.0-kb ermin transcript in brain and spinal cord only.

In brain, expression was strongest in white matter-enriched tissues, such as corpus callosum and medulla. During central nervous system (CNS) development in rat, ermin expression increased during the period when oligodendrocytes were actively myelinating CNS axons. In the developing mouse CNS, ermin protein was expressed late in development, after expression of Mbp and Mog .
