By searching an EST database for sequences similar to Xenopus camello, Popsueva et al. (2001) identified NAT8L, which they called CML3. The deduced 144-amino acid protein has a hydrophobic domain in its N-terminal half and 3 motifs characteristic of an acetyltransferase in its C-terminal half. Hartz (2006) mapped the NAT8L gene to chromosome 4p16.3 based on an alignment of the NAT8L sequence with the genomic sequence (build 36.1).

N-acetyltransferase is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of acetyl groups from acetyl-CoA to arylamines. They have wide specificity for aromatic amines, particularly serotonin, and can also catalyze acetyl transfer between arylamines without CoA. EC 2.3.1.5.
