Cysteine conjugate beta-lyase metabolizes cysteine conjugates of certain halogenated alkenes and alkanes to form reactive metabolites that can produce nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity in experimental animals and man. CCBL1 is a cytosolic enzyme that is responsible for the metabolism of cysteine conjugates of certain halogenated alkenes and alkanes. This metabolism can form reactive metabolites leading to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Increased levels of this enzyme have been linked to schizophrenia. Multiple transcript variants that encode different isoforms have been identified for this gene.Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence with that of the rat enzyme indicated an 82% overall similarity, with 90% similarity around the pyridoxal phosphate-binding site.
