In the course of characterizing a large number of genomic clones isolated from mouse chromosome 17, Kasahara et al. (1987) found a cosmid clone containing a sequence transcribed specifically in the testis. Subsequent studies (Kasahara et al., 1989) demonstrated a map location between Pgk2 and Mep1 on mouse chromosome 17, making it unlikely that the gene is involved in t mutant phenotypes. Kasahara et al. (1989) described the cDNA sequences of the mouse gene, named Tpx1, and of its human counterpart TPX1. The 2 showed 77.8% nucleotide and 70% amino acid sequence similarity. The mouse gene showed 64.2% nucleotide and 55.1% amino acid sequence similarity to that of the rat sperm-coating glycoprotein gene (Scg), the protein product of which is secreted by the epididymis.
